Tom Selleck Writes Alternate ‘Blue Bloods’ Ending for Frank Reagan, Says He ‘Didn’t Have Input’ in Finale
We’ll have to wait for the Blue Bloods series finale to air on Friday, December 13, to see how Tom Selleck’s Frank Reagan ends his story. In the meantime, the Magnum, P.I. alum wrote an alternate ending for his character, which is somewhat of a spoiler in itself.
“I thought about that,” he told Entertainment Weekly in a story published on Thursday, December 12. “I didn’t really have input in where the show was going for a final episode. I think in my alternate ending, the result on the audience would be that Frank Reagan remains a man alone, who never wanted the job he had, that has a hyperactive sense of responsibility, and I think he’d be commissioner till he drops.”
This is interesting considering showrunner Kevin Wade already said that he never saw Frank retiring.
“I’m pretty sure that Frank would stay in his job until the series ended,” he told TV Insider in May. “We didn’t really pursue that avenue because the show is built on him being the police commissioner of New York City. So to take a detour during the last mile, if this is the last mile, I don’t know what he would be doing down at the hardware store or having coffee with old buddies during the day. I always have to look at stuff that generates stories. Police Commissioner of New York generates stories. He’s the CEO of 35,000 cops.”
It will be interesting to see if we get any closure about whether or not Frank is actually looking to retire in the Blue Bloods finale.
Donnie Wahlberg also shared his alternate ending with the outlet, of course, highlighting that he wishes the show was not ending after all.
“I would have Danny Reagan walk right into the next episode of Blue Bloods and we do another 14 seasons. So there’s that,” he said.

“Now that that’s out of the way, I would say I would have Danny Reagan walk right into his next chapter of his life, maybe in a different place doing a similar job and perhaps with someone from the current cast,” he continued. “But I want him to not be too far from the family so that he could still see them and spend time with them, but maybe to see what life has in store for him now that his boys have gone off and he’s empty nesting and his wife’s gone. Maybe he can see what the future holds for him on his own. As long as he can visit the family sometimes. Does that sound like a tease for a spinoff?”
On the subject of spinoffs, Donnie, 55, said that while he was emotional when filming wrapped in June, he does still hope there is a continuation of the franchise in the pipeline.
“It feels like, I read a movie script, I’m negotiating to do a deal for the movie, and I’m walking to my agent’s office, and I keep looking back over my shoulder, hoping someone from Blue Bloods is chasing me down the street saying, ‘Wait, we’re going to do one more season,’” the New Kids on the Block singer told Variety on December 12. “A lot of times in television, 14 years in, people are running for the exit. We’re all trying to move forward now onto what’s next, but I think every one of us has that feeling of just turning back, hoping someone’s there to say, ‘Don’t sign that contract. Wait a minute!’”
