Stockard appeared in Dandy, The All American Girl, also known as Sweet Revenge, in the early stages of her acting career.

“I really didn’t know anything about making movies,” she told People. “But in order to cover up my shyness and uncertainty, I hid behind a flip, sarcastic facade. I got a reputation as quite a mouth.”

1978

Here’s a throwback photo of the star in the halls of Rydell High School as Rizzo. She admitted that she “felt really uptight, like a 35-year-old among children.” The New York native was 33 at the time of filming.

“The marriage of the actors, directors, and writing was at such a high level, and nobody was phoning anything in,” Stockard told Entertainment Weekly. “Everything was just premium; it was a joy to be part of it.”

She found her way back to the theater in the play Apologia. The film icon acknowledged that Rizzo was still one of her most well known roles.

“It’s a little daunting when you come out of the theater and people are shoving photos in your face,” she admitted. “It’s like, yes, that’s great, but it was such a long time ago.”
