Savannah Guthrie Recalls Embarrassing ‘Today’ Moment With Khloe Kardashian About Her Parentage
Savannah Guthrie recalled how one of her most embarrassing Today moments with a guest involved Khloé Kardashian, and the reality star saved the day when posed with an uncomfortable question about the identity of her biological father.
The Arizona native, 53, made the revelation during a February 6 appearance on Andy Cohen’s SiriusXM show, Radio Andy.
“Khloé was on, and there had been these stories circulating in the press that her father, Robert Kardashian, wasn’t really her father,” Savannah explained, adding that the appearance happened in 2012 during her first year of cohosting Today.
“I can’t even remember the details, but I know the producers at the time, none of whom are here today, really wanted me to ask and I was very embarrassed to ask such a question. And so, I did what any naive, green anchor would do, which is leave it to the last,” she continued.
“Well, at the Today show, we have a thing called the ‘hard out.’ And the hard out means you have to be done, the show is going to black at such and such time,” Savannah shared, revealing how Khloé’s TV experience helped save the day.
“I said, ‘Khloé, and just real quickly, in the seconds we have, there’ve been some stories that Robert Kardashian is not your father. Is he?'”
“I don’t know if she’s such a pro that she saw them counting down like ‘three, two …’ And she said, ‘Yep, I know. Nothing to it.’ And I was like, ‘And we’ll be right back.'”
Savannah gushed about Khloé, 40, saying, “She saved my butt. She’s a doll.”
The year prior, the Good American founder’s mom, Kris Jenner, revealed in her 2011 memoir that she had an affair while she was still married to Robert Kardashian Sr., which started the rumors that Khloé might not be Robert’s biological daughter.
In a 2012 episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians titled “Who’s Your Daddy?” Kris, 69, pressed the issue of Khloé’s biological dad, as some fans had speculated after the affair revelation that she might be former family friend O.J. Simpson’s biological daughter.
Kris urged Khloé to take a DNA test, telling producers, “I know all the rumors are absolutely ridiculous. But I know this is something she needs in order to feel complete.” However, her daughter disagreed.
“Mom, I don’t care what they’re saying. Seriously, my dad is Robert Kardashian. My other dad is [Caitlyn] Jenner. I don’t need someone to tell me who my family is,” Khloé explained, as she was raised from birth by Robert and Caitlyn, 75, became part of her life when she married Kris in April 1991, prior to transitioning in 2015.
“I have had the blessing of having two phenomenal fathers. I don’t need a DNA test to prove who my father is,” Koko added. Kris and Robert divorced in 1991, while she and Caitlyn finalized their divorce in 2015.
Robert died at the age of 59 in 2003, months after being diagnosed with esophageal cancer.
In 2018, Khloé reminisced about how she wanted to pass along one of her dad’s most important traits to her daughter, True, whom she shares with ex Tristan Thompson.
“The one thing I would take from how my dad was with us is unconditional love. It’s the entire point of family,” she wrote on her website.
O.J. denied being Khloé’s biological dad during a December 2022 appearance on “The Full Send” podcast, declaring, “The rumor ain’t true. It’s not even anywhere close to being true.” The former NFL star died in April 2024 at the age of 76 following a private battle with cancer.
