Prince William Once Joked About Princess Diana Being a ‘Nightmare’ Grandmother

While the news Meghan Markle and Prince Harry‘s first child’s birth couldn’t be more exciting, fans of the royal couple couldn’t help but wonder what life would be life if Princess Diana was still around. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s royal baby boy, who was welcomed into the world on Monday, May 6, would’ve have been the late princess’ fourth grandchild.

Although royal admirers all around the world would have loved to see Diana as a grandmother, Prince William once joked that his late mother might have come to love her royal grandkids a little too much. “She’d be a nightmare grandmother — absolute nightmare,” the 36-year-old revealed in the 2017 documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy. “She’d love the children to bits, but she’d be an absolute nightmare.”

The Duke of Cambridge hilariously added, “She’d come and go and she’d come in probably at bath time, cause an amazing amount of scene, bubbles everywhere, bathwater all over the place, and then leave.” Too funny!

Although the two brothers had to say goodbye to their beloved mother in a highly publicized and emotional funeral after she passed away in a car accident in August 1997, William revealed that he is “constantly talking about Granny Diana” with his wife Kate Middleton and their eldest children, 5-year-old Prince George and 4-year-old Princess Charlotte. We’re sure the same goes for Prince Louis, 1.

“We’ve got more photos up round the house now of her and we talk about her a bit and stuff. It’s hard, because obviously Catherine didn’t know her, so she cannot really provide that, that level of detail,” the father-of-three explained. “So, I do regularly when putting George or Charlotte to bed, talk about her and just try and remind them that there are two grandmothers — there were two grandmothers — in their lives,” William said, referring to Diana and his father Prince Charles‘ second wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. “It’s important that they know who she was and that she existed.”

It’s been more than two decades since the world lost the Princess of Wales, but William gushed that he still feels connected to his mother. “They always live with you, people you lose like that,” he said. “My mother lives with me every day.”

We can’t wait for Diana to live through stories that Harry and Meg will tell their kids, just like William and Kate.
