Prince Harry “Inherited” Princess Diana’s Ability to Make People Feel Like “Everything’s Gonna Be All Right,” Says Friend Elton John

Like mother, like son. Elton John candidly opened up about his late friend Princess Diana in HBO’s new documentary, Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, and revealed that he believes the beloved royal’s charitable spirit lives on in her youngest son, Prince Harry.

“She had that incredible ability — which [Harry] kind of inherited — to make people feel at ease and make them feel that everything’s gonna be all right,” the 70-year-old musician said in the film. “I haven’t experienced many people in my life who have that ability, but she could walk into a room of people and make them feel as if everything was great.”

Diana was known for her dedication to those suffering from HIV/AIDS during the late 80s and early 90s, when the disease was much more stigmatized than it is today. “It was considered to be a gay disease,” Elton continued. “For someone who was within the royal family and who was a woman, and who was straight, to have someone care from the other side, was an incredible gift.”

In 2015, Harry, 32, founded the Mamohato Children’s Centre in Lesotho, Africa, for children effected by the life-threatening virus. He honored Lady Di’s memory by naming one of the orphanage’s dining halls after her.

“It’s equally important, if not more so, to do the stuff behind the scenes. It’s something that our mother did a lot,” the handsome redhead has said of his and Prince William’s philanthropic mom, whose life was cut short at the age of 36 in a fatal Paris car crash nearly 20 years ago. “And that’s the time you really get to learn. You get the experiences and you actually get the honest truth out of people.”

Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy airs on HBO Monday, July 24, at 10 p.m. EST.
