Outlander’s Sam Heughan ‘Very Emotional’ After Finishing Filming Season 8 as He Teases Final Episode
Sam Heughan hopes Starz fans are ready for an “emotional” season 8 of Outlander.
“Well, that’s it. The last ADR on Outlander completed on the Universal lot. The studio’s behind me, but yeah, very emotional,” Sam, 44, told his Instagram followers on Tuesday, March 4. “I’m very excited for the fans to see the final episode.”
The actor was leaving an Automatic Dialogue Enhancement (ADR) with Universal, which is the process of “the process of rerecording audio in a more controlled and quieter setting,” per Backstage. He dropped a juicy tease about the season 8 finale, telling the camera, “It’s going to be an emotional one, but I know you’re going to love it.”
The Outlander star signed off the message by paying homage to his character Jamie Fraser, ending the video with a “Thank you, Jamie.”
Fans flooded the comment section with messages of appreciation for Sam’s performance of the beloved character over the years, expressing their heartbreak over the series coming to an end.
“Thank you Sam, Jamie has touched my heart like no other character ever has before & probably never will again, I’ll be forever grateful for your phenomenal portrayal Sam,” one fan wrote. Meanwhile, another added, “Oh bless it’s obviously a bit emotional it being the last time playing Jamie Fraser. Big hugs. Lots of love.”

“I don’t want it to end. I love this series so much! Thank you for the fabulous show and for all those years of filming! I’m going to cry now,” a third quipped.
The second half of the 16-episode run of Outlander season 7 began airing in November 2024. Production for season 8, which is anticipated to be the historical drama’s final season, reportedly concluded filming in September 2024 and will run for 10 episodes. The premiere date for season 8 has yet to be announced.
“For nearly a decade Outlander has won the hearts of audiences worldwide and we’re pleased to bring Claire and Jamie’s epic love story to a proper conclusion,” Kathryn Busby, President of Original Programming at Starz, said in a statement. “But before we close this chapter there is plenty of their passionate story to tell over the course of 26 new episodes and even more to explore of this dynamic world and its origin story. We’re thrilled to continue to partner with Matthew, Maril and Ronald and can’t wait to see where their alluring storytelling takes us next.”
Outlander first premiered in 2014 and centers around the love story between Sam’s character Jamie and Claire Fraser, who is played by Caitriona Balfe.
As fans speculate about possible storylines for season 8, the season 7 finale delivered a major cliffhanger, suggesting that Jamie and Claire’s presumed stillborn daughter, Faith, may have actually survived their time in France decades ago.
Showrunner Matthew B. Roberts previously echoed Sam’s emotional sentiment and also gave fans a glimpse into making the latest chapter.
“I think these characters and these stories mean something to people, and we were very careful in crafting a season that brings those feels to the [surface],” he told TV Insider on January 27. “And we wanted to make sure that that ride that you take in season 8 gives you all the traditional feels of Outlander.”
