Mikey Day to Guest Cohost ‘Today’ 2 Months After Walking Off Show’s Set in Viral Moment
Mikey Day will be making his return to the Today set two months after going viral for an interview with Jenna Bush Hager and Hoda Kotb.
It was announced on Thursday, February 5, that Mikey, 44, would be appearing as a guest cohost on Today With Jenna & Friends alongside Jenna, 43.
“Next week is SNL week,” the former first daughter announced during an episode of the show with guest cohost Ego Nwodim. She said she “had so much fun hanging with an SNL star” this week and thought it would be the perfect way to celebrate the comedy show’s 50th anniversary by welcoming more of the show’s stars onto the talk show.
Jenna revealed that in addition to welcoming Mikey as a guest cohost during the week of February 10, Amy Poehler, Ana Gasteyer, Cheri Oteri and Chloe Fineman will each be taking a turn at cohosting the show.
Mikey, of course, is no stranger to the show. He was a guest on the program on December 3, 2024, when Hoda, 60, was still a cohost. He walked off the set of the show during a live segment when he found out that Hoda was officially exiting the program.
“[Hoda’s] leaving — did you read that?” Jenna asked the comedian during the interview.
“No! No!” he replied. “When did this come out?”
Jenna told Mikey that Hoda was leaving on January 13, but Hoda corrected her and said that she was actually leaving on January 10. Mikey was completely shocked by the news, to say the least, so much so that he got up out of his seat and started walking off the stage. “I’m leaving too, then,” he shouted.
Both Jenna and Hoda screamed for him to come back to his seat to finish out the rest of the segment, and he obliged.
“Mikey, there’s a chair open,” Jenna asked once he returned to his seat. “Would you ever host a morning show?”
“Are you kidding? Let’s do it! Jenna and Mikey!” he exclaimed. “Immediately thinking about my own personal interest. I’m so sorry. Are you going to have guest hosts?”
Jenna explained to him that she would be welcoming guest cohosts on the show after Hoda left, leaving the door wide open for Mikey to potentially fill the role.
“Well, I’m throwing my hat in the ring, producers,” he joked.
Later on in the interview, Mikey turned his attention to Hoda and said, “I’m mad you’re leaving for real.”
Days after a clip from his Today interview went viral online, Mikey told Closer that he “didn’t know that Hoda was leaving,” at The American Museum of Natural History Gala in NYC on December 5, 2024.
“I found out on the air,” the NBC star explained. “But I would absolutely go there and fill in anytime they need someone. It would be fun because those ladies are great.”
His wish has been granted, as Today fans have loved getting to see famous faces tackle hosting duties alongside Jenna so far. Many have left comments on the show’s Instagram account praising Jenna for how seamlessly she has been welcoming celebrity guest cohosts and carrying on the show’s legacy.
“Jenna you are doing really good and settling into your new role! I can tell on your face you’re more comfortable and feeling more secure loving the show my very best to you,” one person wrote in a comment.
“Jenna I congratulate you, your doing an amazing job, your killing it!!!” another person said.
