Here’s Why Princess Diana’s Engagement Ring Ended Up On Kate Middleton’s Finger And Not Meghan Markle’s

It’s been spoken about time and time again that Princess Diana‘s stunning engagement ring first belonged to Prince Harry before Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton with it. And now Di’s former butler, Paul Burrell, is revealing why Harry gave up the stunning bauble to his big brother.

In the Amazon Prime documentary The Diana Story, Paul told the sweet story. First, Will picked out his mother’s Cartier watch. “I’d like mummy’s Cartier watch, the one that Grandpa Spencer gave to her for her 21st birthday,” Paul recalled him saying at the time.

Harry proceeded by saying he wanted Di’s oval blue Ceylon sapphire ring, which features 14 solitaire diamonds and is set in 20-carat white gold. “I remember when I held mummy’s hand when I was a small boy and that ring always hurt me because it was so big,” Paul remembered Harry revealing.

But just because the boys claimed the jewelry as kids didn’t mean they weren’t willing to share. When Harry, 34, learned William, 36, was going to propose to Kate, he decided to give him the engagement ring because he felt he should have it, Paul revealed. “Harry said to him: ‘Wouldn’t it be fitting if she had mummy’s ring? Then one day that ring will be sat on the throne of England.'” Our hearts are actually melted.

After Will popped the question, he gushed over the ring during an interview. “It’s my mother’s engagement ring, and it’s very special to me, as Kate is very special to me now as well. It was only right the two were put together,” he shared on ITV at the time. “It was my way of making sure mother didn’t miss out on today and the excitement.”

We guess Harry didn’t think about the fact that he would be getting engaged someday himself (Sorry, Meghan Markle!). But don’t worry, the Duchess of Sussex sports a ring that features a plain band with a large diamond and two smaller diamonds on both sides. The two smaller stones are from Di’s personal collection (so sweet!) and the other stone is from a country called Botswana. It doesn’t get more meaningful than that if you ask us!
