Donny & Marie Through the Years — From Their TV Variety Show to Vegas!
She’s a little bit country and he’s a little bit rock ‘n’ roll, but together Marie Osmond and Donny Osmond — more popularly known as Donny & Marie — have been entertaining audiences since the debut of their Classic TV variety show in 1976 right through their long-running residency at the Flamingo in Las Vegas. It’s been an incredible run that’s allowed them to reach out to a couple of generations of fans.
Donny & Marie, as strange as it may sound, is more or less a spin-off of the family music group, The Osmonds. That began as a barbershop quartet featuring Alan, Wayne, Merrill and Jay Osmond, who were later joined by younger siblings Donny and Jimmy. Things exploded for them in the late ’60s and early ’70s with Donny’s popularity really taking off (which was similar to the way that Michael Jackson became the primary focus of the Jackson 5). At the same time, Marie launched a solo career with a cover version of “Paper Roses,” which became a No. 1 Country hit in 1973 when she was only 13 years old.

During that period, the natural rapport between Donny and Marie began to become apparent, and they started recording together — their first album was 1974’s I’m Leaving It All Up to You — and making television appearances. This would, of course, lead to the Donny & Marie show and everything that’s followed.
