Chip and Joanna Gaines Were Slammed With EPA Fines for Violating “Lead-Safe Practices” on ‘Fixer Upper’

As it turns out, there are some problems that a fresh coat of paint can’t fix! On Wednesday, June 6, Chip Gaines and Joanna Gaines settled with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) after their company, Magnolia Homes, received a number of lead paint violations while remodeling homes on HGTV’s Fixer Upper.

According to a statement released by the EPA’s website, “Video footage of Magnolia’s renovations of older homes appearing in several seasons of Fixer Upper reviewed by EPA did not depict the lead-safe work practices.” In total, the agency found evidence of noncompliance at renovations of 33 properties!

The health and environmental effects of lead paint are extremely serious. “Lead exposure can cause a range of health problems, from behavioral disorders and learning disabilities to seizures and death, putting young children at the greatest risk because their nervous systems are still developing,” the EPA explained.

As a result of these findings, Chip and Joanna’s company has agreed to pay $40,000 in civil fines. Additionally, according to People, the couple has opted to spend $160,000 on “a lead-paint abatement program for homes and child-occupied facilities in their hometown of Waco, TX.” Even if their hefty amends doesn’t negate the initial violation, it’s clear that Chip and Joanna are trying to right their wrong!
